Kia EV3, Six Months In: Does It Still Hold Up Against Pricier Rivals?

Kia EV3 electric compact SUV, front right view The Kia EV3 starts at $31,385 in the US, Kia's cheapest EV to date.

Kia bet the EV3 would become its best-selling US EV, and the early sales data is backing that up. This follow-up Kia EV3 review revisits the car six months after launch, once the new-model buzz fades and the car has to compete on its own merits against pricier rivals that now dominate Q3’s sales charts.

What still holds up

The $36,485 Wind trim, with 321 miles of range, remains the sweet spot in the lineup — the base $31,385 price gets headlines, but the Wind is where the EV3 actually earns comparisons to cars costing thousands more. Six months on, nothing about that calculus has changed: the EV3’s efficiency and interior tech still feel ahead of its price class, and used examples haven’t yet flooded the market enough to pressure resale value.

What’s aged less well

Against newer entries like Toyota’s bZ Woodland and Subaru’s Trailseeker, both of which arrived with genuine off-road capability the EV3 doesn’t attempt, the Kia’s pitch is narrower: it’s a value play, not a do-everything crossover. That’s fine for budget-focused buyers, but it means the EV3 isn’t really competing with this quarter’s biggest sales gainers on the same terms — it’s competing with the Chevy Bolt and similarly priced budget EVs instead.

Does it still hold up?

Yes, with a caveat: the EV3 is still one of the strongest value plays under $35,000, but “value” is a narrower lane than it looked at launch, now that the federal tax credit that used to help close the price gap with pricier EVs is gone entirely. Buyers shopping purely on price still have a clear winner here. Buyers who want off-road capability or longer range at any cost should look elsewhere.
